Cashiers, North Carolina
High in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North
Carolina on the southernmost plateau of the
Appalachian Mountain chain, the village of
Cashiers (pronounced Cash'ers by local
residents) makes a
bucolic setting for secluded summer resorts
and second homes. Encircled by some 28,000
acres of National Forest and rising 3,486
feet above sea level, this area has retained
the same natural beauty described by Thomas
Wolfe in Look
Homeward Angel.
CLIMATE
Cashiers' elevation offers an attractive
climate, with warm days and cool nights even
in the height of summer. Every Autumn the
mountains surrounding Cashiers are
brilliantly paints with red and gold maples,
while the spring months portray a fairytale
setting with pink and white dogwoods,
vibrant azaleas, rhododendrons and mountain
laurel. Cashiers may experience cold winter
temperatures and some snow, but the winter
days are often mild and suitable for a
variety of outdoor activities.
LOCATION
Cashiers is conveniently located only a 2
1/2 hour drive from Atlanta and within 1 1/2
days of south Florida. Regional airports are
easily reached from Cashiers. Asheville and
Greenville/Spartanburg airports are within a
1 1/2 hour drive and Atlanta International
Airport is about 3 hours.
HISTORY
The Village has enjoyed a long history as a
resort area. It first gained prominence when
summer visitors from the Carolina Low
Country vacationed here attracted by the
cool summer temperatures and spectacular
scenery. The illustrious Civil War hero
General Wade Hampton III summered here on
his 2500-acre family estate, which later
became the venerable High Hampton Inn.
CASHIERS
TODAY
Today, the area is known for its fine private
clubs and summer home communities offering a
variety of amenities. Foremost among them
are the golf clubs designed by such masters
as Donald Ross, Arnold Palmer, and George
Cobb. Cashiers is becoming a nationally
recognized golf mecca. There are 40 miles of
golf fairway within a 20 minutes drive from
the center of town. Tom Fazio's renowned
Wade Hampton Golf Club is among the highest ranked
mountain golf courses in the world. For the
tennis enthusiast, Cedar Creek Racquet Club
and Chattooga Club provide excellent tennis
facilities and other family oriented
amenities. The Chattooga Club is also the
site for the World Croquet Championships.
Summerwood, now in the planning stages at
the site of Old Fairfield Inn, will provide
an exceptional forum for the performing
arts. Smoke Rise Field Club offers skeet,
trap, and sporting clays.
OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES
The Mountains provide a backdrop for all
types of outdoor activities. A system of
well maintained mountain trails for hikers
of every ability, rafting on the near by
Ocoee, Nantahala and Chattooga Rivers,
mountain biking, kayaking, and fly-fishing
are popular pastimes. Many outdoor
enthusiasts enjoy the proximity to
Panthertown. This protected wilderness area,
often called the" Yosemite of the East"
offers spectacular hiking, mountain biking,
and horseback riding, along with many
pristine creeks and waterfalls.
CULTURAL
Cashiers is a town rich in the folklore of
the Scottish clans that first settled here
centuries ago. Weaving, woodcarving,
pottery, and quilting are among the crafts
that are available by local artists in the
village shops. There are many wonderful
restaurants to choose from in the area,
offering a variety of continental cuisine
and local favorites. Traditional mountain
music performed by local musicians may also
be enjoyed.
Clearly,
there is much to do in Cashiers. One
could easily enjoy doing nothing at all. Despite
its small town looks and year round
population of only 1,259, Cashiers is a
thriving community. Unpretentious in
demeanor and rich in beauty, Cashiers has a
quiet charm all its own. |
